Colorado Mid-Amateur: Jon Lindstrom leads by three at home course
Jon Lindstrom
LAKEWOOD, Colo. — One of Lakewood Country Club's own, Jon Lindstrom, put his home-course knowledge to good use on Friday when he shot a 6-under-par 65 and grabbed a three-stroke lead after the opening round of the 29th Colorado Mid-Amateur Championship.
Lindstrom, the 2008 Mid-Am champ, was in the first group to tee off and made seven birdies and one bogey in round 1, with eight 3s on his card to go along with one 2.
Jeremy Lederer of Aspen Glen Club posted a 68 and stands in second place in the championship limited to players 25 and older. He made four birdies on the day.
In all, four players broke par on Friday, including two-time champion Steve Irwin, who like Lindstrom is a member at Lakewood CC. Irwin carded two birdies and one bogey on Friday in a round of 70.
Also at 70 is Ryan Axlund of CommonGround Golf Course, who likewise made two birdies and a bogey.
Defending champion Chris Thayer of Bear Creek Golf Club, who last year ended Keith Humerickhouse's run of Mid-Amateur titles at four, started with an even-par 71 after posting three straight birdies on the back nine.
The Mid-Amateur will continue through Sunday. A cut to the low 40 players and ties will be made after Saturday's second round.
