OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. — Florida State got their 2015-2016 collegiate season rolling at the site of this year's U.S. Amateur — Olympia Fields Country Club — with a three-stroke win over a talented field at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational.
Junior Jack Maguire and true freshman Bennett Baker led the team, with a fourth and ninth place finish, respectively. Maguire fired 69-72-67 while Baker opened with 66 and posted 74-71 on the weekend.
Oklahoma State entered the final day tied with Florida State, and despite Wyndham Clark's third-round 65, the Cowboys fell three strokes short. Clark tied for sixth while Walker Cup team member and 2015 British Open low-am honoree Jordan Niebrugge shot three consecutive 71s and tied for 13th.
Maverick McNealy won the individual title by three over Illinois' Thomas Detry. He led Stanford to a fourth place finish, 10 back of the Seminoles, and one back of third-place finishing Arizona State.
