Ed Walsworth wins Missouri Mid-Amateur
2015 champion Ed Walsworth (MGA photo)
EUREKA, Mo. — It wasn't a pretty finish for Ed Walsworth, but the final result will be what truly matters. Walsworth used an opening-round 66 to jump out to a sizable lead, and despite a lousy finish to his final round, he'll have his name engraved on the Missouri Mid-Amateur trophy.
His first round, which led by four strokes after Monday, began with an incredible string of birdies. He was able to circle the first four numbers on his scorecard, followed by two more at holes 6 and 7 to go 6-under before even reaching the turn. He scattered three bogeys and three birdies throughout the rest of his round to post 66 and head to the final day with a nice cushion.
And on Tuesday, things were looking fine through 15 holes as Walsworth was 1-under and looking to cruise to victory. However, he made double-bogeys on 16, 17, and 18, yet still managed to secure a two-stroke win over Chris Kovach.
Kovach fired rounds of 71-74 for a 1-over finish, while third-place finishing Ryan Eckelkamp concluded the tournament at 3-over 147 (74-73).
