Pelletier, Audette share Rhode Island Mid-Amateur lead
Ryan Pelletier
SEEKONK, Mass. — Last year's first-round leader is atop the leaderboard again as Ryan Pelletier fired 4-under 67 to share the Rhode Island Mid-Amateur opening-round lead with Rick Audette Jr.
Pelletier went bogey-free and made all four of his birdies in the first 10 holes while Audette bogeyed 16 but made birdie on three of his final five holes.
"I was looking forward to playing here," Pelletier told the RIGA. "After Olympia Fields, I was ready to get back to hitting short irons again and not long irons to all the greens."
Pelletier qualified for this year's U.S. Amateur, and shot 74-72 to narrowly miss making the cut for match play.
Playing Ledgemont Country Club, just outside Providence across the Massachusetts state line, seven players broke par at the par-71, 6,800-yard course, including defending champion Jamie Lukowicz. Two-time defending Rhode Island Stroke Play champion Brad Valois is one back in third at 68, a stroke ahead of Lukowicz at 69.
Rounding out the under-par players are Dave Patrick, Kolby Simmons, and Andrew Jankowski at 1-under 70, while another seven players shot even and are tied for 10th.
