Joe Jaspers grabs early lead at N.C. Mid-Amateur
Joe Jaspers
MILL SPRING, N.C. — One year after holding off 2014 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Scott Harvey at the North Carolina Mid-Amateur. Joe Jaspers of Huntersville is back ahead by a shot and looking to defend his title.
Jaspers entered the final two holes at even par, but closed with a fury, making eagle at the par-5 17th and then rolling in a birdie at 18. He's a stroke ahead of Robert Hukill III and Matthew Crenshaw, and two ahead of Brian Westveer and Daniel Neveu.
Eighteen players are within four shots of the lead at the 7,000-yard Bright’s Creek Golf Club in Mill Spring, N.C. — a Tom Fazio design.
