Doug Hanzel ahead at Georgia Senior Amateur

MACON, Ga. — Doug Hanzel of Savannah, the defending champion, fired a 2-under-par 70 in round one to lead the Georgia Senior Championship by one stroke. The 29th playing of the annual senior competition is taking place at Brickyard Golf Club, August 26-28.
Hanzel, winner of the 2013 USGA Senior Amateur Championship, recorded a bogey on two, a birdie on four, a bogey on five, a birdie on seven and a bogey on eight to make the turn at 1-over. On the back nine, he birdied 12, 17 and 18 for a 33 to give him his 70 total. He holds the lead over Jack Kearney of Peachtree City, who finished at 1-under-par 71.
Three players finished round one at even-par 72, including Donny Phillips, Jr., of Suwanee, Larry Vaughan of Greensboro and Don Marsh of Johns Creek.
The shot of the day went to Murray Calhoun of Columbus, who recorded a hole-in-one with a 6-iron on the 134-yard 14th hole. He finished round one at 13-over-par 85.
