Sean Birren wins Southern California Public Links
Sean Birren
PASADENA, Calif. — Sean Birren of La Verne posted a smooth, final-round 70 at Course No. 1 at Brookside Golf Club in Pasadena to secure a four-shot win at the Southern California Public Links Amateur Championship.
Birren, who last month won a playoff at the Industry Hills City Championship, made 16 pars and two birdies on Sunday, moving ahead of second-round leader Daniel Yang of San Diego. Yang, whose 68 and 64 in the first two rounds gave him a one-shot lead entering Sunday, fired 75 and fell back into a tie for second place with David Kim of Buena Park.
The 54-hole tournament, which was cut down to the top-30 and ties after 36 holes, was conducted at both courses at Brookside, with the final round taking place at the more difficult of the two — Course No. 1.
Clayton Yamaguchi of Los Angeles, as well as defending champion Jeff Coburn of Temecula, tied for fourth place at six-under par 208, with Yamaguchi firing 69 on the final day to jump into the top five.
