Gary Backlund defends at Kentucky Senior Amateur

DANVILLE, Ky. — The day finished in slightly cooler conditions for the Open Division at the Kentucky Senior Amateur, but exciting rounds of golf were still to be had. The last person to defend their Senior Amateur title was Don Wood in 1995 and 1996. Gary Backlund of Mt. Sterling successfully did so Wednesday with a final round even par for a five-under-par 139 total.
He held off a hard-charging, home-turf-defending Christopher Hill of Danville. Hill shot five-under-par 31s on the front nine in the first and second round, but his efforts came up just short however, as he finished as the runner-up by one shot.
Rounding out the top three were Lexington’s Steve Humphrey, who shot a final-round 73 to finish two-under-par for the championship.
