Johnny Brandt wins Los Angeles City Match Play
Johnny Brandt
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Johnny Brandt left no doubt with his championship match victory over Jason Semthiti on Sunday at the Los Angeles City Match Play. He defeated the former UC-Riverside golfer 7-and-6, and capped off an impressive run as a 41-seed.
Brandt, a native of Glendale who is a sophomore at Claremont-Mudd College, began his run last Sunday with a round-of-64 win over Liam Cavanaugh of Encino, and a 3-and-2 win against Tailin Song later that afternoon. Brandt's toughest match came against Dan Sullivan of Pasadena, going 19 holes in the round of 16 before Brandt closed out the former Southern California Public Links winner.
This Sunday, in the morning semifinal round, Brandt knocked off Kevin Bodlovich of San Pedro by a 2-and-1 margin to reach the finale.
Defending champion Cody Hall lost in the second round to Jeffrey Billauer while reigning Los Angeles City champion Tim Hogarth, who also won the 2013 match play event, fell in the semifinals to Semthiti.
