Chandler Blanchet secures top seed at Florida Amateur Match Play

TEQUESTA, Fla. — The 25th Florida Amateur Match Play is underway after 18 holes of individual stroke play on Thursday, August 6th. The stroke play round determined the seeds for the single elimination Round of 64 match play that will begin on Friday morning at Turtle Creek Club in Tequesta.

After 18 holes of stroke play, the match play bracket is set with the number one seed being Chandler Blanchet, of Gainesville. Blanchet, who plays college golf for the University of West Florida and finished third in the 2015 Amateur Championship, played a solid round of golf with eight birdies and ten pars en route to an impressive 64.

Jeff Leivonen, 64th seed, will face off against Blanchet in the first group tomorrow.

Two strokes behind is this year’s Boys’ Junior Amateur Champion Austin Hitt with a six-under par, 66. Hitt, of Longwood, scored an eagle 2 on the par 4, 13th hole after a string of five birdies on the front nine. He will play Tyler Cohen in his first match.

Rohan Ramnath, of Weston, and Michael DeMorat, of Merritt Island, tied with the third lowest score of five-under par 67. Rohan will be heading off to Harvard soon after the Match Play Championship where he plays on the golf team.

Past Champion, Philip Knowles, of Bradenton, shot a seeding round of 75 to enter match play as the 32nd seed. He will play the 33rd seed, Justin Hulbert, on Friday morning. 2013 Player of the Year, Jon Veneziano, shot one-under par, 71, to be the 11th seed battling Kevin Jorden, 54th seed, in his first match. The highlight of the day came from Steven Chervoney who aced the par three, fifth hole.

Round of 64 matches begin tomorrow, Friday, at 8:00 AM and the Round of 32 will be played in the afternoon. Sixteen players will advance to the Round of 16 matches on Saturday morning followed by the Quarter-Finals in the afternoon. The last two matches will finish on Sunday when the Champion will be crowned.

Prequalifying to determine a championship field of 64 players. 18 holes of stroke play to determine seeding for the match play bracket. Open to male amateur golfers with a valid USGA handicap index not exceeding 11.4. Must be a member of the FSGA.
