Stanford senior David Boote wins Welsh Amateur
David Boote
PRESTATYN, Wales — It was a 4-and-3 championship match victory on Friday for Stanford University senior David Boote, who captured the Welsh Amateur Championship over Elis Lewis.
Boote, who will begin his fourth year as a member of the Cardinal men's golf team this fall, had his toughest match of the tournament in the semifinals when he needed 19 holes to fend off 18-year-old Thomas Williams, making birdie on the first extra hole.
His finale didn't require as much drama, as Boote closed out Lewis on the 15th green for his first win at his home country's championship. He reached the halfway point of the 36-hole final 2-up on Lewis, slowly extending his lead over the course of the remaining holes.
Defending champion Evan Griffith qualified for match play as the 12-seed, but fell in 19 holes during the opening round to Rhys Jones.
The tournament held a different format in 2015, as 36 holes were conducted for stroke play qualifying, determining the top 32 players to take place in match play.
