Tom Swanson goes wire-to-wire at Montana State Amateur
Champion Tom Swanson
GREAT FALLS, Mont. (July 26, 2015) — The Montana State Amateur concluded this week at Meadow Lark Country Club in Great Falls, Mont.
After opening with rounds of 65 and 66, Tom Swanson of Missoula, Mont. built up a 6-stroke lead going into the final round over Payton Taylor. Swanson, a junior at University of Michigan, came out firing in the final round with 3 birdies in his first four holes.
Not wanting to win by too many, Swanson had a bit of hiccup on holes 8-10, making two bogeys and a triple bogey. Only a minor scare, however, as Swanson went on to birdie four of his final 8 holes to end up with a 2-under 70.
"To start the day I really thought about just keep doing what I've been doing, cause it's been working so far. Worked out really well to start. I was three under through four. But kind of had a rough stretch from eight through 10. We had a big wait on 11 tee, cause the green was drive-able today," Swanson told KPAX.com.
It was probably not the stress free round he was looking for but got the job done nonetheless. Swanson finished seven shots ahead of 2nd place finisher Ryan Porch and successfully avenged his runner-up at last year. Defending champion Brandon McIver finished in a tie for 5th at 1-under par for the tournament.
