Let's play two: Iowa Match Play semis and finals set for Wednesday
Defending champ Nate Dunn
POLK CITY, IA (6-30-2015) – After 36 holes of match play yesterday, another 36 holes were played today as the field narrowed at the Iowa Match Play Championship at the Tournament Club of Iowa. With four golfers left, it’s a battle of higher seeds vs. lower seeds.
In the upper bracket, Medalist and top-seed J.D. Anderson lost his round of 32 match to Oelwein’s Josh Black, the 33rd seed, in 19 holes. Black followed that up with a big 8&7 win over #48 seed Matt Weresh and returned in the afternoon to beat #41 seed Ruben Sondjaja, 2&1.
Black will face #21 seed Hunter Van Veen of Monroe, who defeated 5th seeded Broc Everett 1-up and followed that up with an equally tough match, beating Myles Pfingsten (Des Moines), 1-up.
Van Veen and Black will tee it up at 7:30 a.m. in the first semi-final match.
In the lower bracket, last year’s defending champion and the #2 seed Nate Dunn, took care of business quickly in his first two matches, winning 6&5 and 5&4. Dunn’s matches today proved to be more difficult, with a first match win over Fort Dodge resident and #15 seed Colin Pearson, 2&1.
He followed that up in the afternoon by eeking out a win over 26th seeded George Qian of Bettendorf. Qian enjoyed a 1-up lead on two occasions in the round, but the match was all-square after 17. Dunn needed a birdie on the last to walk away with a 1-up win.
Dunn will face #6 seed Gene Elliott of West Des Moines. Elliott defeated Marshal Lamb of Bettendorf, 5&4 and followed that with a 1-up win over Jon Brown of Clive. They will tee off second at 7:45.
The winners of the semis will face off in the final match, set to tee off at 12:45 on Wednesday, July 1.
