Austin Amaya cruises to Long Beach Match Play quarterfinals
LONG BEACH, CA (June 7, 2015) Top-seeded Austin Amaya continued his steady play in Long Beach, winning his match in the round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals next week at Skylinks Golf Club. Earlier on Sunday, he defeated #33 seed Byron Smith 4 and 3, and came back to win his second match of the day against Clarence DeVera, 4 and 2.
It’s been a tale of two sides of the seeding so far over the first weekend of the event. It’s been the lower seeds making their mark, as three of the final seeded players have advanced to the quarters.
In addition to top-seeded Amaya, #3-seed Andrew Levitt continued his winning ways with a 1-up win over #14-seed Michael D’Angelo. #5 seed Torey Edwards had a big win over #21-seed Brett Bennett 5 and four. Eigth-seeded Kyle Upali Desilva had the most dominating win of the day, beating #41-seed Kyle Haas, 8 and 6.
As for the lower seeds who are making hay, #63 seed Darren Saqui, who took second-seeded Matt Murphy to 19 holes in his win on day one, beat #50 seed Martin Manalo, 2-up. #61-seed Johnny Hyun, who bested fourth-seeded Cole Young the day before, won 5 and 4 over #20-seed Ryder Epson.
In other action, #59-seed James Frahm won 2 and 1 over #54-seed Adam Oser and #23-seed Issei Tanabe defeated Matthew Depalma, the 39th-seed, 3 and 2.
Play resumes Saturday, June 13 and concludes with Sunday’s Championship.
