SYRACUSE, NY (June 6, 2015) -- Kevin VandenBerg showed the laser-focus that was lacking yesterday, powering him to win the 2015 Post-Standard Amateur in Syracuse, New York. That gives VandenBerg back-to-back championships after a difficult week. He shot a one-under-par 70 at the Drumlins East Course to finish the tournament at 5-under (281), seven strokes ahead of his closest competitors.

“I didn’t expect this at all,” VandenBerg told Syracuse.com. “I wasn’t playing that well before this tournament. This was totally unexpected.”

John Clare, the 2013 champ, and Brad Monroe, both shot 70 to finished tied for second at 2-over 288. During Clare’s 2013 win, VandenBerg had the lead going into the final round but ended up having a bad day, including a triple-bogey on the short par-4 11th hole. He finish 7th before redeeming himself by winning the Post-Standard last year.

"Today I really focused in," he said. "Honestly I had nightmares about 11 and 18."

His focused, station-to-station approach to today’s final round was all he needed to bring home his second championship in a row.
