Three share lead with 65's to open South Beach International Amateur

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (Dec. 19, 2014) — Richard James of Wales, as well as Americans Anthony Maccaglia and Ben Griffin, posted opening-round 65's at the South Beach International Amateur to lead early in this 72-hole event.

James, who played collegiately for the University of South Florida, posted six-under at Miami Beach Golf Club while Maccaglia and Griffin carded five-under rounds at Normandy Shores Golf Club.

Maccaglia is a senior at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Ga. while Griffin is a freshman at North Carolina.

Rounds one and two will be split between at Miami Beach and Normandy Shores Golf Club with the final two rounds, after the cut of 72 and ties, will be played at Miami Beach Golf Club on Sunday and Monday.

The South Beach International Amateur began Friday in Miami Beach and features 70 “Top 600” world-ranked players representing 29 countries led by 10 players in the “top 100” in the world.

This year's U.S. Amateur winner and runner-up, Gunn Yang of South Korea and Corey Conners of Canada, are both in the field.

Conners is tied for 17th after a two-under 69 at Miami Beach while Yang is far back after a first-round 79 at Normandy Shores.

72-hole event with 36-hole cut. Open to highly ranked amateurs, college players, mid-amateurs and juniors. Non-exempt players must submit a playing resume to be considered for the field.
