ATLANTA, Ga. (Sept. 26, 2014) — Eight players have advanced to the quarterfinals of the Atlanta Amateur Match Play Championship, taking place at Druid Hills Golf Club, September 25-28.
Lee Knox (pictured) of Augusta, a two-time Georgia Amateur champion, was the first to punch his ticket to the quarterfinals with a victory over Mitch Kim of Peachtree Corners, 2 and 1, in the round of 32. He will take on Todd Schmitt of Atlanta, who defeated four-time Atlanta Amateur Match Play champ David Noll, Jr., of Dalton, 1 up, in the round of 16.
Philip Verlander of Decatur won his round of 16 match over top-seed Bob Royak of Alpharetta, 2 and 1. He will face Michael Motz of Milton in the quarterfinals, who defeated Brad Hondros of Atlanta, 3 and 2, in his round of 16 match.
Ashton Pellicano of Albany will challenge Bill Leonard of Dallas in the quarterfinals. Pellicano eliminated Rob VanGorder, Jr., of Acworth, 1 up, in the quarters, while Leonard beat Ryan Stachler of Alpharetta, 2 and 1.
Matthew Russell of Dunwoody topped Justin Johnson of Canton in the round of 16, 21 holes. He'll face Doug Stiles of Athens, who defeated Fred Rescigno, Jr., of Suwanee in the longest match so far, 22 holes, in the round of 16.
