Maryland Amateur: McCarthy rolls, upsets galore
Denny McCarthy
Lutherville Timonium, Md. (June 6, 2014) -- Top seed and defending champion Denny McCarthy won two matches Friday to advance to the quarterfinals at the 93rd Maryland State Amateur Championship at Baltimore Country Club's East Course.
McCarthy, a rising golfer at the University of Virginia, knocked off David Nocar, 7 and 5, before defeating Nick Sorkin, the 17 seed, 3 and 2.
McCarthy will now face No. 9 Mike Blasey, who won a tight match in Round 1 over Peter Knade before rolling past Larry Martonee 4 and 3 in the Round of 16.
No. 2 seed Walter Egloff, who won the qualifying medalist honors as McCarthy was awarded a pass through stroke play into the top of the match play bracket, fell in the first round to No. 31 Ralph Blasey IV. Despite the solid play during stroke-play, Egloff fell 5 and 4 in the first round.
No. 3 Christopher Navarro also lost early, falling to Joseph Rice IV in the Round of 32.
Quarterfinal and semifinal matches are scheduled for Saturday with a 36-hole final slated for Sunday at Baltimore Country Club.
