Trans-Miss Senior: Burda leads after Round 1
LA QUINTA, Calif. (May 20, 2014) -- There's something to be said about local knowledge and Jeff Burda sure proved that theory Tuesday in the first round at the 15th Trans-Mississipp Senior Championship at La Quinta Country Club.
Burda, who holds a residence in the area and plays out of PGA West, shot a 1-over 73 and takes a one-shot lead into Round 2 of the prestigious event filled with some of the nation's top-ranked seniors.
Burda is a big name in California senior golf. He recently won his fifth Sacramento County Senior and has long been a force in Northern and Southern California Golf Association events.
Playing this week out of his Modesto residence, Burda will enter Round 2 a shot up on five players that shot 2-over 74 in Tuesday's opening round.
Bob Kain, Terry Foreman, Rick Nolan, Mac McGee and Jim Knoll all trail Burda by a shot and are well within striking distance.
Eddie Lyons and Gary Hardin are tied for seventh while six other players are at 4-over 76.
All told, there are 13 players inside of three shots of the lead while eight more players are just four shots off the pace.
John Richart shot the round of the day, a 4-under 68, and leads the Super Senior Division. He sits six shots up on Greg Mokler entering Round 2.
In the Legends Flight, Jerry Cundari leads by four shots.
