PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (May 19, 2014) -- Experience is crucial this week at the 2014 California Senior Women's Amateur at the newly-renovated Poppy Hills Golf Course.
After Round 1, it's a pair of multiple-time champions that share the lead.
Marianne Towersey, a seven-time champion, and Lynne Cowan, who's won it four times, are tied atop the leaderboard after shooting 76 in Monday's opening round.
Towersey, from Pebble Beach, recovered nicely from a tough start on the front-nine, recording four birdies and a 3-under 33 on her back nine. Cowan was steady throughout, going 38-38 for her first-round 76.
The duo sits two shots up on Sally Krueger of San Francisco and Corey Weworski of Carlsbad.
“I love Poppy Hills and it’s exciting to experience the new course in its infancy," Towersey said. The greens are smooth but hard to gauge at this point. It’s an exciting track. A lot can happen tomorrow.”
