S. Carolina Sr.: Cloninger wins 2nd
Rick Cloninger
OKATIE, S.C. (May 8, 2014) -- Rick Cloninger shot a final round of 73 at Old Tabby Links for a three day total of even par 216 to win his second SCGA Senior Championship in the last three years. Finishing alone in second at 218 was first round leader Kevin King.
Starting the day with a two shot lead, Cloninger jumped right out of the gates with an opening birdie on the par four 1st hole to extend his lead to four over his nearest competitor. With most of the rest of the participants struggling on the front side, the two time Champion at one point held a seven shot lead over the rest of the field.
While just trying to hit the center of the green on each hole, Cloninger watched Kevin King make a move of his own birdieing four holes on the back nine for a closing 32 to get within two shots. In the end however, it wasn’t enough as the Fort Mill resident and SCGA Board Member did what he needed to get in with the final winning score of 216.
The 2014 SCGA Senior Championship was played on the 6,520 yard, Arnold Palmer designed Old Tabby Links layout in Okatie, SC. The field consisted of 122 players over the age of 55 and was cut to the low 60 and ties after the first two days of play. The Senior Championship is one of 20 Major Championships conducted by the South Carolina Golf Association and is in its 56th year of existence.
