Indiana Mid-Am Team: Palmer, Puckett win shortened event
COLUMBUS, Ind. (April 7, 2014) -- Due to heavy rain, the second round of the Mid-Amateur Team Championship at Harrison Lake CC was cancelled. In order to determine a winner, the four leading teams took part in a sudden death playoff composed of best ball and alternate shot formats.
Todd Palmer and Curt Puckett, Sean Rowen and Chris Pfeifle, and Mark Humphrey and Ben Hunter took best ball pars on the par 4, 10th, knocking out teammates Josh Estelle and Ricky Jones.
On the par 3, 11th Humphrey and Hunter failed to get up-and-down in the alternate shot format, and for the second year in a row just fell short of victory. Palmer and Puckett and Rowen and Pfeifle shared pars on 11 and headed to their third playoff hole, the par 5, 12th.
Rowen nearly chipped in for birdie and the win, but ended up just an inch short after his ball ricocheted off the pin. Both teams holed out for par and headed back to the par 4, 10th.
Palmer pulled his tee shot left and found himself out of bounds, but Puckett was able to pull through. Rowen and Pfeifle failed to get up-and-down, while Puckett converted his five foot putt for par and the first win of the season.
"It feels tremendous to win,” Palmer said. "Sean and Chris definitely didn’t make it easy on us. Hats off to them.”
