GEORGE, S. Africa (March 29, 2014) -- Two of the country’s top ranked amateurs will go head-to-head in the third round of the Sanlam Cape Province Open on Sunday, after the SA number one Christiaan Bezuidenhout joined overnight leader, Zander Lombard, in pole position on Saturday.
Lombard fired an opening five-under-par 67 at Kingswood for a one shot lead, but it was Bezuidenhout’s turn to shoot low numbers when second round action moved across to the George Golf Club.
The Ekurhuleni amateur reeled in six birdies for a flawless six-under-par 66 to set the early clubhouse target at eight under 136.
Lombard matched the number with a six birdie, three bogey 69.
The cut was set at nine-over-par 153, leaving 60 players to contest the final two rounds of the 72-hole championship at George Golf Club on Sunday and Bezuidenhout is relishing the challenge.
“We come down to the Southern Cape every year, and I always play at George Golf Club,” the Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation player said.
“I love this course and it suits my game. I only missed one fairway all day and my game was pretty solid.
“I missed a couple of putts, but nothing too serious. Overall, I’m happy with my progress in the tournament and I’m looking forward to a nice battle with Zander.”
Bezuidenhout has one victory under the belt, but Lombard is still hunting his first win of the season.
The 19-year-old Pretoria golfer was happy with his round, although he had to work hard for his six gains.
“I made six birdies, but I had to work for them,” Lombard said.
“This course sets up that way, so you just accept a couple of bogeys on your card. My swing continues to feel better and my putting is still very solid. I think scoring will be low on Sunday and I’m definitely bringing my best game.”
The leading pair will take a comfortable three shot cushion into the third round.
Reigning Sanlam SA Amateur champion Triston Lawrence carded a 70 and Gerlou Roux share posted a 71 to tie at five under, while Southern Cape’s Staffie Barnard (70) and Nicholas Mitchell (69) are in a large bus at three under.
