Doug Hanzel wins Jones Cup Senior
Doug Hanzel
SEA ISLAND, Ga. (March 5, 2014) -- Doug Hanzel fired a final-round 70 to win by two shots at the Jones Cup Senior Invitational at Ocean Forest Golf Club.
Hanzel, the reigning U.S. Senior champion, entered the second and final round tied alongside Jack Hall, a longtime force in Georgia and national events out of his Sea Island residence. The talented duo shot 69 in the first round but Hall could only manage a 2-over 72 in the finale.
It marks the second Jones Cup Senior title for Hanzel since the event started in 2012.
Kevin King of Bluffton, S.C. finished alone in third with rounds of 72-70 while Emile Vaughan shot 73-72 to take fourth place.
Taylor Adams of St. Simon's Island, Ga. and Bob Stephens of Indianapolis both shot rounds of 74-72 to finish tied for fifth.
Bill Engel of Alexandria, Va. prevailed in a playoff over Don Marsh of John's Creek, Ga. to win the Super Senior Division. Engel shot 70-76 and hung on to beat Don Marsh, who came back into contention with a final round 73.
Massachusetts native Robert Currey (70-77) finished alone in third place.
The Jones Cup Senior Invitational brings together one of the best senior events of the early season schedule. Introduced just three years ago, it serves as a paired event to the early February Jones Cup -- one of the best amateur events in the country.
