JUPITER, Fla. (Jan. 12, 2014) -- A Winter Park veterinarian and an Ormond Beach used-car dealer pulled an upset to win the Senior Division of the 11th SGA Southern States Four-Ball Sunday at Jonathan's Landings Old Trail Course.
Robert Hess, the vet, sank a 9-foot birdie on the second playoff hole to give him and partner Roger Dean the title over theĀ favored team of U.S. Senior Amateur champ Dr. Doug Hanzel of Savannah and Buzz Fly, a onetime PGA Tour player.
Both teams completed regulation in 9-under 135.
In the featured Mid-Am division, Jupiter's Mike Weeks and Scott Wilson of Palm Beach Gardens posted a narrow 1-stroke win, with a 10-under 134 total. Weeks won the Palm Beach County championship in a walk last summer, but it was Wilson who posted an unlikely birdie on their next-to-last hole for the margin of victory.
Bill Luceno of Palm Beach Gardens and Patrick McCabe of Jupiter won the Super Senior Division at 140.
Fifty teams including many nationally-prominent career amateurs competed in the event, which was shortened to 36 holes by a Friday washout.
