JUPITER, Fla. (Jan. 3, 2013) -- A quick look at the player field list for the upcoming 11th Southern States Four-Ball will no doubt show a who's who among the top mid-amateurs and seniors across the country.
Followers of the event, among the winter's top tournaments, and those that know its rich history, have come to expect nothing less from the annual team championship.
Held this year Jan. 10-12 at the Old Trail Course at Jonathan's Landing, the tournament was originally created by the legendary Bobby Jones and played eight times before and after World War II. The Southern Golf Association revived the event in 2011.
The list of top-flight players in the field is impressive.
In the Mid-Amateur Division, former Major League pitcher Jimmy Key and partner Marty Rifkin return to defend their 2013 title. The duo closed with a final-round 5-under 67 thanks to pair of long birdie putts to outduel runners-up Mike Weeks and Scott Wilson.
Wilson and Weeks will also be participating this year, hoping to knock off last year's winners.
The team of former U.S. Senior winner and Walker Cup captain Buddy Marucci and Pine Needles-Mid Pines COO Kelly Miller will surely be in the mix along with Southern Golf Association hall-of-famer Tim Jackson and Kevin Watford.
The Senior Division will feature reigning U.S. Senior Amateur Champion Doug Hanzel, who'll join with partner Buzz Fly to try and best contenders Clarence Hardison and Skip Runnels, Roger Dean and Robert Hess and Randy Elliot and Bret Voisin.
Amateurgolf.com will have full coverage of the event, including results and recaps throughout its three rounds.
