Round of 16 set at Alabama Match Play
Sam Love
AUBURN, Ala. (Aug. 8, 2013) -- The 13th State Match Play Championship is down to the round of 16 after the rounds of 64 and 32 were completed Thursday at Moore’s Mill Club in Auburn.
No. 1 seed is Trussville’s Sam Love, who plays for UAB, and he recently lost in a playoff in the prestigious Southern Amateur. He won both his matches, as did No. 2 seed Montgomery’s Thomas Sutton (pictured with this story), who is a UAB teammate of Love’s.
Other highly seeded players include Matthew Gourgeot of Decatur and Bart Barnes of Troy, and both of them survived to play another day, but fifth seed and former State Junior champion Forrest Gamble of Birmingham fell in the first round.
Former State champions in the field who won both matches include Woodie Eubanks of Trussville, Robbie Cotten of Brewton and Brinson Holder of Point Clear.
Play continues Friday with the round of 16 and quarterfinals.
