Iowa Senior Am: Palmer wins it

POLK CITY, Iowa (June 30, 2013) — Joe Palmer of West Des Moines shot a steady even-par 71, hitting 17 of 18 greens in regulation to claim the 35th Iowa Senior Amateur Championship in his first try. Palmer finished with a three day total of 3-over-par 216 to win over Gene Elliot of West Des Moines finished one shot back after a third round 75. The tournament was contested at Tournament Club of Iowa in Polk City.

The final group of Palmer, Elliot, and Bob Brummel of Orange City were close all day, and the lead changed hands several times. Dan Dalziel of Cedar Rapids was in the hunt all day, but ended up one shot back at 219.

Second round leader Elliot faltered over a three hole stretch, with bogeys on 5 and 7, and a double bogey on 6. Palmer made two birdies and two bogeys to stay steady throughout the round. Elliot had several putts fall just inches short of the hole all day, including a putt to tie on the 18th hole. Palmer proceeded to two putt for par and claim the tournament. Brummel was one-under-par for his first eight holes, but played his next ten five-over-par to finish two shots back at 219.

In the Super Senior Division, Scott Carnes of Hiawatha finished ahead of the pack after carding a final round two-over-par 73, for a three day total of eight-over-par. Lee Sullivan of Ankeny finished second, scoring a seven-over-par 78 during the final round. Jack Peacock of Cedar Rapids narrowly beat out Bill Ericksen for third, finishing one stroke ahead.
