In 1927 Devereux Emmet to layed out an 18-hole
golf links style course, much of it on land reclaimed
from the marshes. For their clubhouse, the
membership modernized the three story Victorian
country estate that was owned by original property
owner John N. Auerbach.
The club was easily accessible by boat via the canals
and nearby Lake Kath Ellen, a deep body of water
that provided a fine anchorage for motor boats.
The club eventually fell on hard times, and the
course and clubhouse fell into disrepair. The
downward spiral continued until 1960, when
residents of Hewlett Harbor purchased the club from
the remaining members. Since that time the club has
become one of the most prominent clubs in the
Metropolitan area. In 1994 the course and clubhouse
were completely renovated.
Each year,
The Seawane Club hosts the Richardson Memorial,
which honors the late New York Times writer William
D. Richardson.
