Over the years, since its creation in 1874,
the finest golfers in the country have
played the links at Seaton Carew including
the legendary Harry Vardon, J H Taylor,
James Braid and several other Open
Champions. Dr Alister MacKenzie
lengthened the Course in 1925 to 6,500
yards and designed new holes eastwards
including the planting of over 2,000
buckthorn bushes. In 1937 Walter Hagen
played an exhibition match at Seaton
Carew during a European Tour and
commented "It is a splendid course, the
links are well groomed. It is not an easy
course and provides a good test of golf. It
is one I would like to play quite often."
By varying the playing sequence of the 22
Holes there are up to 5 course layouts,
three of which are played regularly, the
Old, Brabazon and Micklem and all present
a varied and challenging test with plenty of
twists, turns, dunes and bunkers. The
Brabazon has hosted the competition of
the same name, just one of a series of R&A
and EGU Events held over the years. The
Micklem course was used for the Carris
Trophy in 1996, when Graeme Storm
pipped Justin Rose by a single shot and
Oliver Wilson's 66 remains the course
record for that layout. (courtesy Seaton
