NCGA Hanna-Wherman Cup: Pros lead amateurs after Day 1

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (Oct. 24, 2011) -- The NCPGA professionals lead the NCGA amateurs 6 ½ to 3 ½ after the first day of competition of the Hanna-Wehrman Cup Monday at Poppy Hills GC.

The afternoon four-ball matches saw professionals Stuart Smith and Steve Pellegrine trounce amateurs Kevin Wentworth and Anthony Barrera 5 and 4. The NCGA Master Division Four-Ball Champion team of Randy Haag and Darryl Donovan topped professionals Lance Johnson and Chris Borrego 4 and 3. Haag and Donovan also recorded the first win for the NCGA team of the day, finishing 1-up over their competitors in their morning match.

In the morning foursomes, the NCPGA defeated the NCGA 3 ½ to 1 ½. Each of the NCPGA’s victories came from strong scores from the professionals, winning the matches by three holes each.

The annual event, beginning in 1967, invites the top Northern California amateurs to play against the best NCPGA professionals, determined through a qualifying points system. This three-round tournament combines four-ball match play, foursome match play and singles match play in a Ryder Cup format.

The NCGA Hanna-Wehrman team comprises Chris Clark, Anthony Barrera, Kevin Wentworth, Danny Paniccia, Darryl Donovan, Randy Haag, Mike Steiler, Logan Goulding, Bryson Dechambeau, Brent Booth, and Steve Wilson. They competed against the NCPGA team of Eric Goettsch, Mitch Lowe, Steve Hummel, Jason Schmuhl, Rick Leibovich, Lance Johnson, Jeffrey Anderson, Steve Pellegrine, Stuart Smith, Robert Poole and Chris Borrego.



ABOUT THE Hanna-Wehrman Cup Matches

The Hanna-Wehrman Cup features 10 amateur players representing the NCGA (top players from the previous season’s points list) taking on 10 professional players representing the Northern California PGA in a Ryder Cup-like format.

The first day of play consists of two rounds—one round of four-ball match play (better ball) and one round of foursome match play (alternate shot). The second day of play’s final rounds consist of singles match play.
