North Carolina Super Senior: Sprouts wins in playoff
MOUNT AIRY, N.C. (Sept. 28, 2011) - Sixty-six year old Mike Sprouts, a retired oil company computer systems programmer, birdied the first playoff hole to win the 4th NC Super Senior Championship.
Mike was tied with Larry Boswell of Jamestown after the 17th. On 18, Mike’s second found the front bunker while Larry’s approach finished 10 feet from the hole. Sprouts knew he had to make par to have a chance and responded with a great bunker shot that almost went in. Boswell’s putt for the win was just wide and the playoff was on.
On the first playoff hole both players hit the par 5 17th in regulation. Boswell just missed from 15 feet then Sprouts rolled in his 10 footer for the title.
George Leight fired a tournament low round of 67 to finish tied for third with former NC Senior Am champion Bob Kulp of Advance, NC.
