MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Aug. 29, 2012) -- Three down and two to go. The 2012 Golf.com World Amateur Handicap Championship heads to the final day of flight play Thursday with the contenders hoping to sneak into Friday's final round at TPC Myrtle Beach.
Rain, which has sogged down the courses throughout the area all week, stayed away (for the most part) on Wednesday as Round 3 was completed.
Many players enter Thursday's fourth round with a chance to reach Friday's championship round.
In Flight 1, leader Mike Schmidt is one shot ahead of Jack Sheehan and third-place Drew Evanoka. Flight 3 is a dogfight between leaders Johannes Erasmus and Chase Wilfong with Dallas Willam and Steve Greer not far behind.
Jonathan Whitfield, Keith Storey and leader William McKiegan will battle it out in Flight 7 while Todd Keller, Antony Sellers and Frank Payne compete for Flight 8.
In Flight 14, Leroy Mines and leader Zhao ZhenHao will fight for the title while Roger Clemens --- yes, that Roger Clemens ---and Mike Williams take aim at the title for Flight 18, one of the event's 50-59 flights.
Alan Fleetwood and Rick Sanford are in contention in Flight 36, a 60-69 division while Jerry Edwards, Wayne Johnson and Vernon Denham are all in cotention in the 70-plus flight 56.
And in the Women's division's flight 64, Janice Warf and Tammy McCoy are tied for the lead with Hilda Darwin just one shot back.
Play continues Thursday morning with the final round of flighted play. The final round will tee off Friday morning at TPC Myrtle Beach where the 2012 World Amateur Champion will be crowned.
