European Mid-Amateur Championship:Maco Willberg of Finland Takes the Title
SOLA GOLFKLUBB, NORWAY (June 4, 2011) -- The International European Mid-Amateur Championships 2011 at Sola Golf Club has come to a close and the winner of this year’s competition is Maco Willberg of Finland. Willberg becomes the 1st Finn to ever win the European Championship.
Jacobo Cestino, of Spain, lead the tournament from start to hole 15 of the final round. Then his game unraveled! He tragically scored a triple bogie on the 15th, a double on the 16th and a bogie on the 17th thus erasing his 5 stroke lead and handing over the victory to Willberg. Cestino thus finish in 2nd place, the same result as in 2010.
Willlberg tells us that he was very pleased with his round today and his play in general over the past 3 days. He played very consistently despite 3 days of very different weather conditions: wet, sunny and windy!
As with most participants, he found the Sola Course to be in good condition. The Green keepers did an excellent job of preparing the course despite a week of rain prior to the competition. The greens were consistent, truthful and very fast. The course, he says “ is very challenging with a great finish on the last 4 holes. The course can proudly call itself a Championship course!”
The best Norwegian was Joachim Aslaksen 75 - 76 – 76 and + 11 over the 3 days.
The best local golfer, at +19, was Erwin Rooyaker with rounds of 79 - 77 -79.
