SEASIDE, Calif. (January 8, 2017) -- The Inaugural McClure Cup hosted by Bayonet and Black Horse was captured by Cal State Monterey Bay junior Matthew Hedges.
Playing at his school's usual stomping grounds, Hedges began the tournament with a 3-under 69 in wet and rainy conditions on the slightly easier of the two courses, Black Horse. It was the only round in the 60's shot in the tournament and it gave Hedges a one-shot lead over Jeffrey Inouye-Wong and Kyle Nelson.
Hedges followed up the great round with yet another, a 1-under 71 at the difficult Bayonet course. Once again it was the low-round of the day and it gave Hedges a three-shot win over Pepperdine freshman Josh McCarthy who finished with rounds of 71-72.
Creighton University sophomore Josh McCollum finished solo third with rounds of 72-73. He was followed by San Jose State sophomore Kevin Velo (73-74) in 4th and Kevin Huff (72-76) and Matt Heitel (71-77) in a tie for 5th. Jeffrey Inouye-Wong (T10) and Kyle Nelson (T7) struggled to keep up their first-round pace.
