PALM CITY, FL (March 22, 2016)--No. 7 Texas (855) has won once more. This time they have captured the Valspar Collegiate by five-stokes over No. 21 LSU (860) at the Floridian Golf Course. This is the second consecutive win for Texas after a win last week at the
Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic. It is their fourth win in their last five team competitions.
The Longhorns playing with a world of confidence won on the strength of three players inside the top-8. Sophomore Doug Ghim (-1) paced Texas with a tie for third. Ghim, a All-Big 12 first teamer as a freshman, finished just one-stroke out a three-way tie for first place at 2-under par.
Behind Ghim were junior's Beau Hossler (+1) and Gavin Hall (+1) as they finished in an eighth place deadlock. Hall started the day as the leader following yesterday's 36-holes but he struggled in the final round with a 6-over par 77.
Both Ghim and Hossler played well in the final round shooting matching 3-under par 68's.
The aforementioned tie for medalist honors was between LSU All-SEC second teamer; senior Zach Wright (-2) and Texas A&M freshman Chandler Phillips (-2). Ghim and LSU freshman Luis Gagne finished one-back at 1-under par.
In all there were nine teams ranked in the latest Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll competing at the Valspar Collegiate. Rounding out the top-5 of the team standings were Texas A&M (871) and No. 12 Oklahoma State (871) in third place; in a fifth place tie No. 19 South Carolina (874) and No. 1 Illinois (874).
