PINEHURST, N.C. — In a sudden-death playoff at the Country Club of North Carolina Amateur, David Sargent of Davidson College came away victorious over UNC freshman Joshua Martin.
The final round, played at the course of the tournament's namesake, saw Sargent make a crucial eagle-2 on the 433-yard par-5 16th hole en route to a 2-under par 70. Meanwhile, Martin made bogey at 17 and fought back for a birdie on 18 to force extra holes.
Timothy Conover led through the first two rounds, which were played at Pine Needles Lodge and Mid Pines Inn. Conover posted 71-68, while Martin trailed one back at 140 (72-68). The come-from-behind win for Sargent was just two, but a comeback win nonetheless, with Conover's final-round 75 granting him a fifth place finish.
Mid-Amateur player Sherrill Britt impressed with his third place showing, which he shared with UNC golfer William Register. Britt, who won this year's Carolinas Mid-Amateur and CPGA Senior Open, used scores of 73-71-69 to finish high on the leaderboard in a field mostly filled with young collegiate talent.
