New England Amateur: John Gratton takes lead
WINCHESTER, Mass. (July 22, 2014) -- John Gratton shot 5-under 66 and holds the first-round lead at the 85th playing of the New England Amateur Championship.
At Winchester Country Club, Gratton grabbed a one-shot lead over New Hampshire's Nicholas Pandelena, who plays at Boston College.
Rhode Island's Bobby Leopold, who recently won his state amateur, leads a group of four players tied for third place. Leopold, Steve Dilisio, Benjamin Day and Patrick Albanesi all shot 3-under 68 and are tied heading into Wednesday's second round.
Defending champion Evan Russell of the University of Hartford shot 3-over 74 in Round 1 and is tied for 55th.

Held since 1926, the New England Amateur
brings together players from six New England
area states — Connecticut, Maine,
Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and
Rhode Island. The event host rotates between
each of the six represented states. The

(1986), Billy Andrade (1983), and Brad Faxon
(1980, 1981).
Entries are open to amateur golfers who hold
membership in a
club belonging to one of the six New England State
Golf
Associations and have an up-to-date USGA/GHIN
