PALM CITY, Fla. – Pete Williams and Jimmy Key played a conservative final round of four under par 68 and claimed a seven-stroke victory Sunday in the sixth annual Palm Beach County Mid-Senior Four-Ball Championship at The Fox Club.

With a seven-stroke advantage after a 61 Saturday, “We tried not to do anything stupid,” said Key, 49, a former major league pitcher. “Yesterday, everything we looked at went in. Today, we were more conservative in the way we played.”

At 129, Williams and Key equaled the tournament record set by Mark Brown and Phil Ridolfo Jr. in 2006 at Mayacoo Lakes in West Palm Beach.

Williams, 51, a commercial airlines pilot, had four birdies, giving him 10 in two days, including four of the seven in a row they had on the back nine Saturday. Key made seven birdies overall. On Sunday, both birdied the par-4 fourth hole and both bogeyed the par-4 13th, their only error of the weekend.

It was the second team title for Williams and Key, both at The Fox. They also won the Dodge Four-Ball here last year.

Eoghan O’Connell, the managing general partner of The Fox Club and a former Walker Cup player for Great Britain & Ireland, paired with Alistar Brown for a pair of 68s and tied for second in the field 33 teams of Palm Beach County Golf Association members 40 years and older. They were awarded low net honors on 131.

Next on the PBCGA schedule: June 5-6, Stroke Play, Medalist GC, Hobe Sound, and June 19-20 Junior-Senior, Abacoa GC, Jupiter. For membership information and tournament entry, go to www.pbcga.org.
