Hanzel named SGA Amateur of Month

BIRMINGHAM, ALA – Senior golfer Doug Hanzel of Savannah, GA., has been named the Southern Golf Association’s National Amateur of the Month for September. Hanzel, 56, won on the strength of his victory in the USGA National Senior Amateur Championship. Hanzel won the Senior Am by defeating Oregon’s Pat O’Donnell, 4 and 2, in the final match at Wade Hampton GC in Cashiers, NC. A physician specializing in pulmonary critical care at Southeast Medical Group, Hanzel uses and insulin pump to control his diabetes. He had to overcome issues with the affliction during one of his earlier matches in the tournament.

The Am of the Month award is selected by a national, blue-ribbon panel of golf officials, coaches and journalists. This year’s previous winners of the March-thru-October award were Stanford’s Patrick Rodgers, Chinese teen Masters sensation Guan Tianlang, Cal’s Max Homa, Alabama’s Cory Whitsett, Southern Am champ Zachary Olsen and U.S. Am champ Matt Fitzpatrick. The coveted award is one of many ways the SGA promotes and advances amateur golf, including its storied Southern Amateur, the 108th playing scheduled next July at the exclusive Honors Course near Chattanooga.
