MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Aug. 30, 2013) -- Lyon
Lazare of Villa Park, Calif. is the
Gross Champion at the 2013 World Amateur
Handicap Championship.
Lazare, a recent graduate from Chapman
University, fired a 7-over 79 at the
rugged Dye Course at Barefoot Resort & Golf
Friday to win the gross flight's
championship. Lazare tied senior champion
Lynn
Cormier in the final round but
won in a tiebreaker.
The focus on a gross championship began this
year. Sponsored by
amateurgolf.com, prizes were awarded to low
gross competitors in each of the
World Am's five divisions. Low gross winners,
and the overall gross champion,
were awarded a 30th Annual World Amateur-
logoed Original Bag from Jones Golf,
an amateurgolf.com membership and more from
our sponsors and partners.
Lazare, who's equally known for his skills as a
musical composer and a golfer,
medaled earlier this year in a local U.S. Open
qualifier. As a senior at Chapman
University, Lazare earned All-Southern
California
Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference honors thanks to an average round
of 76.2 while leading his team in
five of 12 rounds played.
Lazare won the Men 49-and-under division to
advance to Friday's championship
round.
