Mississippi Senior: Horsley prevails
Tunica, Miss. (Aug. 25, 2013) - Players arrived at Tunica National for their third and final round to find a day full of low, darker clouds, slight winds, and a much cooler temperature. While the sunshine hid, the players hit the course to see what they could do in their final round. After having two days to learn the course, they were ready to come out with a strong game plan.
In our Senior Championship flight, our two day leader Stewart Horsley of Jackson brought in another great round shooting 73 to place him at 215 for the tournament total. He certainly came prepared to play and it paid off for him as he takes home his first Senior Amateur title. Ken Peacock of Brandon was only 5 shots back and posted a round of 75 to place him in second place. For our Senior First flight, Philip Roberts of New Albany went 78-72-75 to place him at 225 and win the flight. Bill Hood of Greenville and Pete Powell of Natchez tied for second in the flight by carding tournament totals of 226. In our Senior Second flight, Paul Hunt of Eupora posted scores of 78-82 and a one-under 71 today to snatch the win for that flight with a total of 231. Behind him also one shot back is Dill Gunn of Brandon who posted a 232 total. In our Senior Third flight, Lamar Murrell of McComb fired rounds of 88-80-79 bringing him to a total of 247 for the win. Kelly Greenwood of Charleston finished behind him scoring 86-87-78 for 251. Our Super Senior division brought in some excellent scores throughout the weekend. After today’s final round, Fred Brister of Jackson walked away with the Super Senior Championship title after posting an even par 72 to place him at 215 for the weekend. Our defending champion Ken Hogue played very well but was unable to catch Brister.
He posted scores of 69-76-73 for a total of 218. Lynn Pippin also brought in a tournament total of 218, tying Hogue for second place. In our Super Senior First flight, Steve McMicking of Hernando was our champion for the weekend. He carded rounds of 80-75-73 for a total of 228. Danny Hooker of Pontotoc was close behind, firing a 230 for the weekend, and Tommy Morgan of Tupelo also fired a 230 total, which put them both in second place for the flight. For the Super Senior Second flight, Robin Foley of Brandon ended the weekend with scores of 84-79-76 for a tournament total of 239. Mike Justice of Madison was one stroke behind him, totaling a 240 after shooting 87-77-76. Finally, our Grand Master Championship flight ended with the defending champion Cecil Watkins of Picayune bringing home the win for another year. He managed to squeeze past John Garner and fire a round of 2 over 74 to bring his total to 234 for the weekend. John Garner of Petal struggled a bit and carded an 81 which put him in second place with a total of 240. Our third place winner Larry Wagster of Oxford also carded an 81 and finished at 246 for the tournaments.

Mississippi Senior Amateur
Tournament is scheduled for 54 holes of stroke play;
players will be flighted after 36 holes of play within
their age division. Field size is limited to the first
104
players.
The Championship is open to male amateurs who
are
bona fide residents of the state of Mississippi for at
least 60 days prior to the first round of the
tournament.
Divisions:
- Seniors must have reached their 50th birthday
prior to the first day of the championship.
- Super Seniors must have reached their 60th
birthday prior to the first day of the championship.
- Grand Masters must have reached their 70th
birthday prior to the first day of the championship.
