GARDEN CITY, Kan. (Aug. 25, 2013) -- Wichita's Charlie Stevens fought through the tough conditions this weekend to claim the 2013 High Plains Amateur. As winds averaged over 20 mph all weekend, Stevens bested the field with his consistent play shooting two rounds of one over par 72 (144 total). Fellow Wichitan's Jack Courington and Kansas Amateur Runner-up, Sam Stevens, finished in a tie for second at 146. In the Masters Division, KGA veteran's Zac Burton of Manhattan held off Shawn Audrain of Garden City with his final round 74 to claim the Master's Division crown. Senior Division leader following round one was Wichita's Tracy Chamberlin. Chamberlin, a past champion in several KGA events, stood his ground to win the Senior Division by three shots over Andover's Randy Vautravers.
Over at Buffalo Dunes, Andrew Beckler of Topeka, Hank Simpson of Mission Hills and Matt Porter of Aurora, CO all showed they had what it takes to compete out west shooting a 2-under par 70. In the Senior Division, Jim Cornell of Garden City, battled back with a second day score of 84 to take gross honors while Roger McDowell of Shawnee Mission and Ed Chamberlin of Bucklin tied for low net.
