RALEIGH, NC – Final match play results of the 4th North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by Carolina Country Club in Raleigh, NC on Sunday, August 4, 2013 (6304 yards, par 35-36—71, 70.8/133).
Carter Jenkins of Raleigh added to his trophy collection by defeating Alex Nianouris of Salisbury, 6 and 5, in the championship match. Jenkins wins his second men’s CGA major title in three weeks and has quickly vaulted into the conversation as one of the best players in the Carolinas. He won the Carolinas Amateur Championship played July 11-14 at The Ocean Course in Kiawah Island, SC.
Needing only one hour and 35 minutes to play the match, Jenkins, an 18-year-old rising freshman at UNC-Greensboro, sprinted out to an early lead with a chip-in eagle on the first hole.
Nianouris, a 19-year old sophomore at Davidson College, was unable to thwart Jenkins’ momentum. Jenkins won holes 3, 4, 6, 7 and 9 to vault to a 6 up lead at the turn. Hole 10 was halved with birdies.
Nianouris holed a 25 foot birdie on the par three 11th hole to win his only hole of the match and make a small dent into the Jenkins lead. But on the par five 12th hole Jenkins carded a birdie to regain a 6 up advantage and dormie status. The 13th hole was halved with par threes that sealed a 6 and 5 victory for Jenkins.
”I have played the course a few times so I knew the angles and shots to hit,” stated Jenkins. “Plus knowing there are a lot of birdie possibilities out there gave me the confidence to take advantage when I could.”
Jenkins was six-under par and Nianouris was one-over par through 13 holes.
“This is the second straight great summer that I have had,” Jenkins said. “I won the NC Junior and Dogwood Junior last summer and the Carolinas Amateur and the NC Match Play this summer. It’s incredible. I am looking forward to college golf this fall and really excited about the possibilities for this season.”
