SAN FRANCISCO, CA (Februrary 23, 2006) -- Sunshine and a slight breeze set the stage for a perfect day to play golf in the San Francisco City Golf Championship Senior Men’s Match Play Quarterfinals on Thursday February 23 at Harding Park.

In the most exciting match of the day, Ronnie Wiley of San Francisco Golf Club defeated Herb Jensen of the Del Paso Country Club 1 up after 19 holes. Wiley was 2 down at the 7th hole and fought back. He had birdies on 7, 8, 9, and 13 and was 2 up with 2 to play when he had bunker problems on 17 and conceded a birdie to Jensen who had knocked it stiff. On 18, Wiley pulled his fairway wood second shot into the bushes left of the green and then conceded a par putt to Jensen. The match was even and would require extra holes to settle the score.

In sudden-death, Jensen pulled his drive on No. 1 into the left woods but managed a great approach leaving himself a 40-foot putt. Wiley didn’t get all of his gap wedge approach shot and was short of the green. A nice chip and a five-foot putt saved his par and won him the match when Jensen three putted. Wiley said, “It was a tough match and I played a lot better yesterday but I hope to have my “A” game for the finals."

Warren Wincorn of the Olympic Club, who had the upset of the day yesterday by beating defending champion Rob Thompson on the 22nd hole, lost 6 and 5 to Dave Carroll of Silverado. Carroll played flawlessly and started his round by getting up and down on the first hole to save par. Carroll was 6 up through eight holes and never let up. He had birdies on 2, 4, and 11 to clinch the win.

Frank Abbott of Silverado defeated Bob Callan of the Olympic Club 2 and 1. Abbott had conceded birdie putts on 6 and 9 and made a 15 footer for birdie on 17 after hitting a fine 6 iron to close out the match. Abbott said, “I simply survived today but it was great to be here.”

Jeff Early of Pleasanton defeated Rolly Lamonthagne 5 and 3. Early had birdies on 2, 6, and 7 and consistently placed his long, straight drives in the center of the fairway.

Competition continues on Saturday, March 4th at Harding Park with match play starting at 7:46 am.
