Bob Kearney
BRYAN, Texas (Aug. 18, 2012) -- Even with wet weather imminent, scoring conditions were absolutely picture perfect for the players during the second round of the State Senior Amateur Championship which is being held at Miramont Country Club. Little to no wind paired with cooler temperatures and soft conditions allowed players to make a move up the leaderboard as they fought to secure a spot within the cut line for tomorrow’s final round. Ninety-six seniors looked to grasp a spot in the top fifty-four and forty-eight super seniors looked to break the top twenty-four to secure their Sunday tee time.
Bob Kearney of Houston entered today’s second round looking to extend his two stroke lead over Mac McGee but the birdies just didn’t fall in bunches as they did the previous day. Opening his round with three straight pars, Kearney, found trouble on the par four, 4th hole, and saw his two shot lead disappear with a double-bogey, six. A birdie on the par three, 7th, was quickly erased as Kearney made his second double-bogey on his opening nine holes, giving him an opening nine total of three over par, 39. Kearney righted the ship on the back nine with eight straight pars and a closing birdie as he fired a second round of two over par, 74, giving him a two day total of 141(-3).
The round of the day goes to Dallas’ Chuck Palmer who carded a second round 67 giving him a two day total of 143(-1) which places him in a four way tie for fourth place. A birdie on the second hole was immediately given back on the par three 3rd as Palmer carded a bogey, four. From that point forward Palmer’s play vaulted him up the leaderboard. Six birdies, three of which came on consecutive holes, and one lone bogey gave Palmer a stellar round of five under par, 67. Tied with Palmer for second heading into tomorrow’s final round are Gary Durbin, Owen Joyner, and Gary Hardin. All four players find themselves two shots behind second round leader Kearney.
Michael Hopson of Lufkin entered the day leading the Super Senior division by three shots. Even with a second round of two over par, 74, Hopson extended his lead as he heads into tomorrow’s final round with a four shot advantage. Hopson’s front nine was up and down and included two birdies, four pars, and three bogeys. Heading into the back nine, Hopson, found his rhythm as he rattled off seven straight pars before carding a final bogey on the par four, 17th. His two day total of two under par, 142, gives him a two stroke lead on Peter Kirchner and Bob Smith who look to make a charge during tomorrow’s final round.
Once all players had finished, fifty-nine players found themselves within the 155(+11) cut line in the Senior division and twenty-five players within the 161(+17) cut line in the Super Senior division. Tomorrow’s final round begins at 7:30AM with the leaders set to tee off at 9:27AM.
