Matt Williams, a senior at Chico State, wins with birdie on the first playoff hole against Jordan Barooday of Sacramento

FAIRFIELD, Calif. (Aug. 12, 2012) – Matt Williams, a senior who plays for Chico State, won the Fairfield City title after a playoff with Jordan Baroody of Sacramento. Both players tied at 143, both posting 69, 74. Williams made a birdie on the first playoff hole, the par 5 first after chipping his third shot to two feet and holing the putt. When asked about his play in the tournament, Williams commented, “Probably the most exciting thing that happened during the rounds was when I holed out for eagle on the par 5, 17th at Rancho Solano during the first round on Saturday. I hit driver and then 4 iron about 30 yards short of the green. I used my 59 degree wedge in an attempt to get up and down for birdie but to my surprise I holed out for eagle, just a little nice added bonus. The eagle got me to -3 for the day. I played the par 5s -5 for the day. Past success and familiarity with the courses also helped Williams in the win. “I felt prepared and confident coming into the tournament because I won the Fairfield Junior Golf Tournament when I was 16 at the same two courses. This also helped me in the playoff because I won the junior tournament in a three-hole playoff. “ There was a tie for third at 144 between Bill Bergstrom of Paradise Valley (71-73) and Kyle Harman of Manteca (72-72.) Fifth place went to Dale Bouguennec of Contra Costa Country Club who posted a 146 (69-77.) In the senior division Steve Henderick of Hiddenbrooke GC shot a 145 (68-77) and won by six strokes. There was a three-way tie at 151 between Michael Carr of Olympic Club, Tony Amaral of Paradise Valley and Samboon Kitipan also of Paradise Valley. All three men shot 76, 75.
