U.S. Amateur qualifying hits home stretch

Qualifying for the 2012 U.S. Amateur Championship at Cherry Hill Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colo. continues throughout the week at various locations across the United States.

Following Monday's full schedule of qualifying at 25 spots, recent Porter Cup winner Richy Werenski will lead a group of hopefuls from the northeast as Massachusetts, California, Mississippi, New York, Tennessee and Georgia host throughout the week.

Qualifying will wrap up Wednesday, Aug. 1 at Oakbrook Golf and Country Club in Lakewood, Wash. ahead of the Aug. 13-19 event.

Early qualifiers include Gary Nicklaus, son of golfing legend Jack, who clinched a berth at The Wanderers Club in Wellington, Fla. Nicklaus, who earned more than $750,000 during a professional career that included 100 PGA events from 2000-2002.

Tyler Raber (pictured, above), who competes in various amateurgolf.com Tournament Series events, was the third qualifier at Marin Country Club in Novato, Calif.

The most impressive scores came from the July 9 qualifier in Texarkana, Ark. at Texarkana Country Club where medalist Connor Black of Houston fired a 13-under 131 total. Second-place medalist Drew Evans of Dallas was at 9-under 135 with third qualifier Jade Scott shot 7-under 137.
