The University of Louisiana-Lafayette golfer stands at four-under par after a rain-soaked 2nd round

NEW ORLEANS, LA (June 8, 2012) -- Brandt Garon of Baton Rouge was one of the lucky ones Saturday, completing his round of one-under par 71 on Friday before the rains came again at TPC Louisiana in the 93rd edition of the Louisiana Golf Association Amateur Championship. Coupled with his 69 in Thursday’s first round, the University of Louisiana-Lafayette golfer stands at four-under par 140. Landon Lyons, who is also from Baton Rouge and plays at LSU, is one shot in arrears after rounds of 70 and 71. First-round leader LeRoy Griffin of Baton Rouge had a bit more difficulty in his second round, firing a three-over par 75 to stand at one-under 143 (68/75). Billy Gabbert of Sulphur is also at one-under par through 36 holes (71/70). Play was suspended at 5:30 PM for an hour and a half as a strong shower rendered the course unplayable for a short period of time. Darkness finally fell at 8:00 PM with all of the afternoon starters still on the course. A 7:30 AM re-start is scheduled for Saturday morning to complete the second round, with the cut to take place immediately after completion of round two. Once the cut is made, pairings and starting times will be completed and the third round will commence. Assuming no further weather delays, the third round should begin sometime between 10:30 and 11:30 AM on Saturday. Third round play will begin off both #1 and #10 tees with the leaders going last off #1. The shot of the day was struck by Steve Luminais of Reserve, who hit a seven-iron into the hole on the 156 yard 17th hole. The Pete Dye-designed TPC Louisiana track played to a par of 72 at just over 6,900 yards on Friday. The course is in wonderful condition and continues to draw accolades from this field of the best amateurs in Louisiana. Friday’s play was conducted under hot and humid conditions with an infrequent shower but the field dodged the thunderstorms and lightning that forced tournament officials to twice suspend play on Thursday. The forecast for the remainder of the week includes a 60% chance of showers with continued hot and humid conditions.
