Metropolitan Open: Berkmeyer ties for 3rd
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (July 9, 2011) -- While Shawn Jasper did not start the final round of the 6th Metropolitan Open Championship five shots back, as he did in 2010, he did find that margin between him and the Championship after his 6th Hole. Only this time around he only had 12 holes remaining to make that charge and repeat, and that he did! Jasper would play Holes 10-18 at 5-under, get to 3-under and watch the final two groups come in and cap off the victory.
Three other professionals began the final round in the lead at 3-under, Garrett Jones (Madison, WI), Chris Naegel (St. Louis, MO/Meadowbrook CC) and Zach Barlow (Percy, IL). Each of these three would come to the 480 yard par 4 finishing hole on the Lewis & Clark Course at the Country Club of St. Albans with an opportunity to make birdie and tie for the lead as Jasper was watching from the practice putting green behind 18.
Skip Berkmeyer would fire a 2-under par 68 on the day and finish T-3 to earn the Low Amateur award for the second consecutive year. The 2006 Open Champion has finished in the top 5 in 4 of the 6 Open Championships.
